The ONLINE course AN INTRODUCTION TO BAYESIAN STATISTICS WITH MCMC FOR ANIMAL
GENETIC IMPROVEMENT will be taught by Agustin Blasco (theory) and Marina Martinez
Alvaro (problems) from 15 to 19 June 2026, from 3 pm to 7 pm CEST (Valencia-Spain
time).

The course begins reviewing classical statistics methods of inference,
highlighting their weaknesses, and explaining the advantages of Bayesian inference
assessing uncertainty with probabilities. New concepts as the probability of
relevance, the probability of similarity, and the minimum guaranteed value are
used for inferences, and it is shown how easy is in the context of MCMC to compare
treatments as ratios instead of differences.
MCMC (Makov Chain Monte Carlo) methods are explained intuitively and applied to
linear models: estimation of fixed effects, prediction of genetic values,
estimation of variance components and genetic parameters. More complex topics such
as hierarchical models, genetics of the environmental variability, analysis of
selected data and the Bayesian alphabet are also outlined. The course continues by
addressing the problem of prior probability and concludes with several techniques
for model choice: Likelihood ratio tests, Bayes factors, AIC, BIC, and DIC.
Public software and software developed by the teachers will be used for practical
exercises. Although it is not needed to know R for the course, R 4.3.2 or later
version is required to be installed in the participant's laptop in order to run
some programs.
The course is based on the book by Agustin Blasco Bayesian data Analysis for
Animal Scientists (Springer, 2017). Lecture notes and papers for discussion will
