Job Description

Genus strives to provide beef, dairy and pork producers with superior
breeding stock to enable the production of affordable and nutritious
animal protein for consumers. PIC is the swine division with a mission
to pioneer animal genetic improvement to help nourish the world.

PIC currently supplies over 70% of the world’s top pork producers. We
directly employ people in 18 countries worldwide and our products are
available in more than 50 countries across the globe. We are a diverse
team, ranging from scientists to sales teams, production personnel to
customer service, and are all united by a passion for producing nutritious,
affordable pork and a commitment to continuous improvement.

The Genetic Research Specialist initiates, leads, conducts and supports
product development based on biology, bio-tech, physiology, microbiology,
agriculture, food, and genomic research. The role is expected to be
impactful for global pork producers, driving innovation and deploying
state-of-the-art genetic improvement platforms impacting the bottom line
of PIC customers.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

- Design and implement robust global genetic evaluations using current
  software, technology, and statistical methodology
- Develop and test new statistical methodology for global genetic
  evaluations
- Develop and implement strategy to leverage new technologies to enhance
  genetic improvement programs across multiple traits, populations, and
  markets
- Develop models for predicting trait and economic responses across
  production segments
- Develop and maintain relationships with world-leading institutions
  specializing in genetic improvement
- Investigate opportunities in multi-omic platforms (e.g. Microbiome,
  Metabolomics, Proteomics, etc.) and emerging analytical techniques
  including AI, Machine Learning, etc.
- Develop and implement practical research investigations to address
  customer concerns
- Analyze and interpret data for communication with customers

Qualifications

- Ph.D. degree in Animal Breeding or Quantitative Genetics
- A minimum of 5 years of experience
- Experience with national or global genetic evaluations; Experience with
  single-step BLUP preferred
- Experience implementing technologies and techniques used to make genetic
  improvement.
- Experience modeling genetic improvement across livestock production
  segments
- Fluent in English, both verbal and written.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills are required
- Excellent technical writing and presentation skills with the ability to
  communicate in an organized and concise manner
- Ability to work both autonomously and collaborate across teams and
  functional areas
- Ability to work in and maintain performance expectations in diverse
  cultural contexts and fast-paced environment
- Work requires continual attention to detail and ability to establish
  priorities and meet deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and solve problems in an empowered,
  self-directed/managed work environment
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and other relevant software applications;
  Knowledge and experience with databases, Linux, and high-performance
  computing preferred.
- Ability to travel approximately 10%
